The sun beamed down on the red carpet outside of the Palais during this year's MIPCOM - a stark contrast to the rain clouds that dampened spirits during April's market. The bright weather seemed to echo the mood of the buyers as attendance appeared to be up (at least on the face of it) from the previous 18 months, where distributor numbers - and enthusiasm - has been at a low.
Being essentially a content market, MIP isn't necessarily the most obvious choice for WRN as a technology supplier; however, it is considered to be THE event for any professional in the television industry. Both David (Treadway, WRN's MD) and I enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with several WRN clients and partners whilst soaking up a bit of the French Riviera sunshine on the famous Croisette and batting about business development ideas over baguettes.
Hot topics on the conference agenda this year included ‘the mobility of content', with entrepreneur Javier Perez Dolset, founder and CEO of Zed Worldwide, commenting in his keynote speech that content to mobile is a better revenue spinner than that of online streaming. Techno-bods would have enjoyed the chance to sample Eutelsat's 3D TV on its stand, which was visibly stunning (although I'm not sure about the orange glasses!)
We were pleased to note that, among the many distributors that turned out to MIP 09, one of our new clients, Warner Bros had a busy stand. We managed to fit in some networking at the UK Indies party, where we were targeting content producers and distributors who wish to digitise, store and archive their content. We finished off the week representing WRN at the Eutelsat HD party. As our strategic plans unfold for next year, it is important to position ourselves as visibly as possible in the satellite space and at the cutting edge of broadcast technology solutions, particularly as we have plans for HD.
Finally, WRN did sign one contract at MIP - a partnership MOU with an exciting multi-national company. Keep watching the WRN news page for more details.
